Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the United States. Since gaining popularity in the mid-1960s, it has been clouded in controversy. Because marijuana has both damaging and healing effects, the drug's illegality is constantly debated. Unlike some other illegal substances, marijuana can be prescribed by doctors and used medicinally in some parts of the country. Marijuana traces the history of this controversial drug, describes both the positive and negative effects it can have on the body and mind, and explains why it currently is illegal.
