Excerpts

In 1989, having just taken early retirement from my position as Chief Administrative Officer at Burger King Corporation, I was invited to speak to a class of seniors at Washington State University about strategy in the fast food business. In addition to describing the workings of a highly competitive segment of the restaurant industry, I took the opportunity to reflect on my career and offer some advice on entering the work force after their graduation. My comments were well received and I started to think about documenting what I considered to be important tips and skills that could help young people to get a good solid start in their careers. Over the years my project has been interrupted but I never forgot the goal, in part because I was often reminded by so many people who ignore the fundamental building blocks for success. You can read this book quickly and use the information immediately to make your job easier and more enjoyable and it will help you to succeed because every tip and suggestion has been tried and proven to work. It is not my goal to cover all topics in great depth. Rather this is a handbook of the basics, other books are available with more in depth information on specific subjects that you should eventually read. This book deals with many of the large and small requirements for success in any job and in managing your career and your life. I recognize that time is a big factor in determining what you read. Our time is precious and the demands of everyday business make it difficult to read and learn as much as we would like. This is why such books as the "One Minute Manager" and "Who Moved My Cheese" have been read by millions of people. They are short and easy to read with a valuable message that has an immediate impact on many readers. Hopefully this book will make the same kind of sense and you will use this information to your advantage. I've had 47 years of experience in business and the military, working in diverse industries, from information technology to fast food. I have worked for many different kinds of companies and industries. I also lived and worked in several countries. With this background I believe I can pass on some of the simple tools and principles that should make a difference in your career. It took me many years to make good use of these ideas, but I would have done it much sooner if someone had given me this book earlier in my career.
